James Garvey has been a good friend of mine since I started surfing competitions. He has always been full of enormous energy and I'm not quite sure where he gets all from half of the time. He has now decided to put his energy levels to the test. He is planning on swimming the equivalent distance of the English Channel in 18 short hours to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis. That's 22 miles... 22... no I didn't hit the '2' key twice. I thought I read it wrong also but he's going for it. I strongly suggest you have your head examined James.I have no doubt he will be able to do it and it is for a great cause so please support. Here is a photo by David Olsthoorn. This is a small wave at Rileys from Summer. I fell awkwardly and hyper extended my arm. This meant weeks of pain and not having a clue what was wrong with me. The surf was pumping from then on, and of course I had to surf and make it worse. It turns out I tore connective tissue from shoulder blade the whole way around to my chest wall. It took 6 weeks and some physio to heal properly.Just goes to show how powerful Rileys is, even on a smaller day.

Peru.

Peru was a fun trip. After a total travel time of 32 hours we arrived in Punta Hermosa where the contest would be held in two days time. During warm up sessions I got the chance to meet up with some friends from other countries. We were lucky that we got two amazing waves for the contest, a long left and right hand point.

When the contest started I should have got through my first heat but didnt catch any decent sets waves. I got knocked into repocharge round 1. I got through this heat and had my round 2 rep the next day. I was coming second the whole way through my heat on one wave. I couldn't get a good back up wave and lost in the last 30 seconds to a south african. I finished 65th in the world. I felt I could have done better.

I would like to thank my sponsors Volcom, Alder and surfworld for making it possible for me to travel to the world games. I would also like to thanks waxon surfboards for supplying me with high quality equipment. My local surfclub, Bundoran Board Riders were also a massiver help so thanks to everyone who helped me out there. I owe everyone a wave at the peak.

I would also like to thank Zoe Lally. Withotu her I would not have been able to attend. LEDGEND!

I would also like to apoligize to all the groms for the grom abuse haha.

Waxons Newest Design. Grovvel Board

Here are a few shots of Conor Canavens new design. He shaped this board for me a few weeks ago and it has been going amazing. It flies through flat sections and generates speed from nothing. It is 5'5', my normal short board is 5'10'. It sounds tiny but is wider than my normal boards and keeps its width the whole way through to its tail. This is why it is so fast. It is perfect for small fat waves but goes just as well in any kind of conditions up to 3ft. Everyone should have one of these in their quiver!

Volcom Clover Fish!

Volcom have announced they are going to hold the first ever Clover fish. It should be a sick event, with free food, drinks and tons of givaways.

The contest will take place in Portrush. Registration is at 8am.

There are four divisions.

Groms(14 and under)

Juniors(15 to 17)

Mens Pro-am(18 and over)

Girls(all ages)

300£ To the open winner!!

Top 3 in each catagory will qualify for the european VQS Championships in May to get a chance to qualify for the VQS World Championships in the US.

Junior Irish Championship Tour

Last weekend was the last event on the tour. The contest was at Rosnowlagh. It was one foot onshore mush. I had a fun surf before my heat and in my heat I didnt catch a wave. Got knocked in the first round and went home. I was gutted because I had trained hard for this event, in and out of the water. I woke up the next morning, drove to easkey and saw minis absolutly firing with noone around. I surfed minis all day perfect and realised that I had forgotten to have fun in the water during the competition season. I learned there is so much more to surfing than winning a competition.

Aaron Reid gave me a call and told me he was Irish Champ and I finished second. I was stoked for aaron!

Luck of The Irish

Photographer Stuart Gaston came over for a few days last week with my good mate Joe Woods. We had pumping surf a few days before they got here, then it went pretty much flat. The days after they left we got super fun waves, no wind and rock splitting sun. This is now the third day after they have felt and there is still sick waves, loads of sun and no wind and it's gonna be getting better in the next few days by the looks of things!! Yewwww!!!

Sligo Open 2010

The Sligo Open was a bit of a let down for me. There was a huge turnout and it was heps of fun. All the boys were there, and its always good to see them all again. I got third in the under 18s after winning all of my heats up to the final. I caught my best wave after the buzzer so I was gutted. But you have to take the good with the bad, and you learn more from losing than winning. I was stoked my good friend, Aaron Reid won. Theres always next year!

I went to Bali last August with Joel Grew on a training trip. It was such a sick place. the people are lovely, the food is great and the waves are incredable. I went with a really cool crew, Zak Lawton, Tom Good, Tassy Swallow, Miles Lee Hargreves and Gwen Spurlock. We were staying in a sick house with bradly masters and Brad Gerlach. I cant wait to get back there after school..

Portugal with The Eyres and Stu Gaston

Here are a few photos from a recent trip to Portugal With a really cool crew. I travelled over with Rory Tuohy and Craig Butler. When we arrived we were getting ready to go through customs when I realised I had forgotten my passpot on the Plane. We had to wait half an hour before I could get it back. In the meantime Craig, Rory and I scouted for people that looked like the crew we were meeting up with in Portugal. We decided a fat tanned man with more hair in his beird than on his head and a camera hanging around his neck was our photographer, Stuart Gaston. When we finally made it through custon we were sore from laughing and I was slightly pissed off that a vending machine had eaten the only change I had. It wasnt the best start to the trip. The boys and I then met up with the rest of the crew, Cam wickens, Tom Butler, Stuart Gaston, Jack Mander and Joe Woods. When we arrived at the Eyres lodge we met up with the family.. Simon, Karin, Keshia, Klaus and Luis. They were really welcoming and treated us like family, ensuring we had a really good time on the trip. We had waves everyday along with a few beers every night with the boys down the local. Stuart, Joe and hopefully Luis will be coming over to Bundoran in August for a few days..

Junior Euros.

The Junior Europeans went well this year. They were in Portugal. We got decent waves for it and the whole team had a good laugh, especially with young Aaron O'hare. It was my first time competing at the Europeans, and I got threw a few rounds. In tthe end I lost to a sound Italian lad by about a point. I was gutted but you learn more from losing than winning. I learned a lot from out two head coaches Pascal Devine and Stevie Burns. Pascal is like a guru, teaching the older boys valuable life lessons and what you have to do become number one. The same with Stevie. He's an old man with wise words and tonnes a stories. He is the person that has pushed me the most in my surfing and all in just a few weeks. It was a pleasure to compete and travell with the Irish team again.

Competiton Season Starts Once Again!

With a new tour consisting of four competitions for Irish Champion and two competitions for the Junior Irish Surf Team finally kicking off everyone was amped and super keen to do well.

Lahinch!

Lahinch is one of the more enjoyable trips on the Junior Tour this year. It's a small little town but it's crammed with surfers. It's a long trip down from Bundoran, but time flies in the back of Patsy' transit!

When we arrived it was flat. We got a bit worried and thought it was a waste to travel the whole down here and not being able to surf so we went to Crab and surfed one foot rights. I went for dinner with Damo, Aaron and Iarom in Kenny' and went back to Damos to watch Scarface to get me amped for competition the next day.

I woke up not so amped but at least there was waves. My mate Aaron Reid won the comp for the second year in a row. I came fourth which meant I had to win in Tramore to qualify for the Irish Team for the Europeans.

Tramore!

I was dreading travelling the whole way to Tramore to spend one night there. I travelled down with Cian Logue and Patsy. It took us a six hour drive to get us there. We arrived met up with the boys and went back to the nice cosy van for a good nights sleep.

We woke up and surprisingly the waves were acually half decent. I ended up winning the competition with Aaron Reid following in second place. This guarenteed both our places on the Irish team. We were stoked to be going together and the trip down to Tramore finally felt worth while.

I will be travelling to the Europeans in Portugal in May. Buzzin'!
